艾美奖nominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced in July this year. And now, the list of winners for the Emmy Awards 2022 is finally out. Let’s take a quick look at the Emmy-nominated shows where design took the lead in narration.
Any story on the screen is only as good as the ability of the filmmaker to pull you into its vivid world, making you feel the thrum and beat of its characters. The nominated shows for the Emmy Awards 2022 offer a staggering range of many disparate worlds: ones that are brimming with joy, others that both suffocate and enthral you, and some that take you into spaces inhabited by blooming flowers and men with murders on their mind in equal measure. If you’re looking to derive some good ‘ol cinematic inspirations, we have collated a list of Emmy-nominated shows to help you curate your next watchlist based on yourdesign choices.
Sleek brutalism — Ozark
In the Netflix version ofBreaking Bad, the gloomy Ozarks serves as the perfect backdrop for a family caught in the quagmire of money laundering and the Mexican drug cartel. Their brutalist home in the middle of the misty Ozark perfectly conveys the undercurrent of dread. The presence of ceiling-to-floor windows, angular roofs and pared-down concrete surfaces add to the overall doom.
Goth — Stranger Things
The fourth season of the popular Netflix series took us into the origin story of the Upside Down, and it was replete with the goth aesthetic of the highest order—twisting vines made way for snakes, the villain Vecna’s house seemed straight out of a comic book with circling bats and peeling black walls merging with stately pillars and imposing windows.
Animated pop — Squid Game
In the show that broke all the records, a group of random men and women are put together in a game of death and millions of dollars. The road to that bounty is simple—play childhood games and die if you lose. The show draws a wealth of inspiration from the towering labyrinth of staircases inspired by M.C. Escher’s famous Relativity lithograph to the ultra-minimalistic waiting lounge inspired by Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Center or Santiago Calatrava’s World Trade Center PATH Station.

Plush maximalism — Inventing Anna
For a series based in New York and one that covers the life of a legendary woman who ended up scamming the elites of the city, the production designer got the portrayal of the social classes on point. From the head office of New York Magazine, Rikers Island jail to the 11 Howard hotel – nearly every establishment is an exaggeration and for good reason. The details are staggeringly accurate too: Venetian plaster, expensive antiques, the wallpaper and even the ultra-rich backsplash in the kitchen.
