A look inside Akara Art: A new gallery in heritage Mumbai

Located in a picturesque by-lane—a stone’s throw away from the vibrant promenade of the Gateway of India.

Well-known art dealer and founder, Puneet Shah, established Akara Art in 2009 to create a platform for expanding and expressing his artistic views and ideas, such as thematically curated shows, along with showcasing established modern artists, upcoming contemporary artists, and artists who have not received recognition for their contribution toward Indian art.

“Indian Art boasts of a plethora of talent. Most good artists have produced seminal works at some point in their trajectory and it is in the benefit of our culture, history and the Indian art industry that we explore the available talent and contribution made by artists in our country”, says Shah, referencing the aim and objective of Akara Art.

Shah aims to use his experience and knowledge to create a new standard through innovation and experimentation at Akara Art.

岬teries of the Organism, its first step towards this journey, is the inaugural exhibition, which investigates human forms and the relationship between humans and their fellow creatures. The drawings, paintings and sculptures in the show, range from early modern works to contemporary canvases, included formal studies, incisive portraits, explorations of the psyche, and fantasies of composite beings. A varied mix of media such as paintings, sculptures and photographs are exhibited from private collections by artists such as Manjit Bawa, Amrita Sher-Gil, BC Sanyal, Raqib Shaw and Ravinder Reddy, to name a few.
