Discover this architectural oasis in Mérida, that marries its surrounding landscape

The design of this vacation home located in Yucatán honours the materials of the region and the elements of the land

On the outskirts of Mérida, Mexico is this 2,690-square-feet (250-square-metre) house. The home is built by Warm Architects and the interiors designed by Bernado Negrete of Bernado Negrete Studio. The clients—a family of four (a couple with two small children)—wanted to have a relaxing weekend home, "and the design was supposed to focus on the views of the outdoors, and above all, of the polo matches outside," Negrete says. The two terraces and the sunken pool with a firepit invite one to enjoy the outdoors and the landscape throughout the year.

As Per the Lifestyle

Conceiving relaxed and comfortable spaces that favour each family member was Negrete's top priority. He wanted the design to be based on the lifestyle of the users; the interiors also had to focus on the entertainment of adults and children.

Climate-Sensitive Home

The home sports natural textures, earthy finishes and neutral colours, and the structure and spaces have a sense of interconnectedness between the interior and the exterior. “The geographical landscape of Mérida inspired us. The walls of the house were made with the materials locally available and we constantly sought to find a balance between the materials,” avers Negrete. The wood and stone veneer were placed to give continuity to architecture.

Handmade Pieces

The handcrafted furniture in the home is easy to maintain and adapts to the local climate. "We specially like the pieces, like the carved stone oval washbasin and the one-piece parota dining room table," shares Negrete.
