Bangalore: This half-global, half-local couple’s pad is a modernist marvel

A globetrotting couple wanted a home with a calm, minimalistic vibe, with plenty of comfort—an ideal place to retire to at the end of the day. To design their Bangalore home, they approached TaP Design Inc. co-founders Iesha Parekh Shellugar and Sneha Talati, and the two with their creative cartridge loaded, filled the home with earthy textures, Botticino and grey tundra marble, patterned tiles, and pine wood and cement finishes. "The home has a perfectly glocalised design ethos," says Talati.

Entrance

The foyer projects a true-to-the-earth look, with elegant finishes and wooden rafters. A bijou storage unit anchors one wall, playing host to a pair of blow glass vases from Good Earth, while a hexagonal wall mirror from Chairs and Company lends the space a modish, metallic edge. A daisy shoe cabinet stands sentinel on the opposite wall, in striking contrast to the muted grey periphery.

Living Room

The living room sports elegant materials, with wood, cane, marble, metal, leather and soft fabrics. Dove grey wall panels serve as a backdrop to the seating layout, which is zoned by a tufted, bottle green sofa from Simply Sofas. "Customised tables and accents from Magari enrich the recesses, while a mammoth handmade rug from Carpet Kingdom provides a tactile underpinning layer," shares Parekh Shellugar.

Dining Room

Silvery mirrors and hushed grey panels cocoon the dining room like a smoky, shimmery veil. From the heart of the room, rises a dining table, "painstakingly curated for the dining space, with assistance from Simply Sofas," says Talati. The straight lines and angular base of the table are fittingly tamed by custom-designed upholstered chairs from Magari. The wallpaper and sleek mirror panels breathe quiet sophistication.

Kitchen

The colour palette of the living room–dominated by grey, white and oak veneer–is translated further in the cooking area, with pearly shades of sea blue thrown in for good measure. The modular kitchen is outfitted by Livspace.

Master Bedroom

Grey wooden flooring, pine wood veneer on the wall and ceiling, and petite wooden embellishments channel a cabin vibe. The bay window doubles as a cosy perch with louvred book storage. Classic white mouldings grace the bay window and walls in a dado-esque style. The bed, designed by Magari, is flanked by pearl-style pendants by The Purple Turtles. The rug is by Carpet Kingdom India. To the side, sage wardrobes by Design360 Ink complement the cool blue aesthetic. "Brass inlay is a common element throughout the house and is also used for the wardrobe shutters in the way of circular, brushed brass knobs," says Parekh Shellugar.

Master Bedroom Lounge and Bar

"The lounge space was designed as an extension of the bedroom," notes Talati. A navy blue bar fills one corner, its moulding nodding to the style of the master bedroom. Teakwood and rattan chairs, upholstered in mustard fabric, exude a summery spirit, scintillating against the muted, mural-style wallpapered backdrop. Opposite, a powder blue shadowbox-style wall acts as a showcase for decorative frames and souvenirs.

Second Bedroom

Emerald green and gold create a royal retreat in the second bedroom. "The main feature of the room is the Rama Green wall that makes for a statement headboard and provides a backdrop to the upholstered bed," avers Parekh Shellugar. The room's bijou footprint led the designers to look to the room's vertical real estate. "For example, ledges on either side of the bed stand in for full-fledged bedside tables," explains Talati. White oak wooden flooring and light-toned curtains from Petals serve as a counterpoint to the bold feature wall.
