When Aditi Vora Nair ofAVN Interiorswas entrusted with redesigning an 1,800-square-foot Bandra apartment that overlooked the sea, she knew every space had to be designed to highlight the beautiful view. The result is a fluid space, resplendent in blacks, white, greys and hints of gold. Here, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea become like constantly changing canvases, that bring to life to the luxurious and largely monotone interiors. “The decision was made to keep the interiors as subtle as possible with monotones—almost allowing the hues of the sea and the sky to add the colour required,” explains Nair.

A soft grey palette takes centre stage in the living room, with a bespoke tufted sofa from Mosaic Furniture, textured rug from Kaati Carpets, and curtains from Home Couture. Black makes an appearance in a set of curved tables from Mosaic Furniture and cushions from The One break the greyscale palette. The glass partition behind the sofa separates the living room from the terrace bar.

A sleek dining table from Bo Concept sits on the Lasa white Italian marble flooring, that is seen throughout the house. The painting by Antonio Mora is in tandem with the monochrome theme of the sea-facing apartment. Glimmers of gold add a subtle shine—seen in the pendant light custom designed by AVN Interiors and produced by a local vendor.

Carving Spaces

The idea was to transform a two-bedroom home into a three bedroom that accommodated a couple and the growing needs of their 16-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son. The designer says, “The apartment was a large 2BHK with a separate den. Though well-maintained, it had lots of pockets of spaces that could be utilized better. The kids were sharing a large room andbathroom. The space had to be re-planned to accommodate individual rooms for them with separate baths.”

The terrace bar area over-looking the sea is a beloved space as it’s a multi-purpose room that can be used for yoga, workouts, lounging or partying. The endless sea views just add to the charm. The black counters are made from fluted MDF finished with lamination and the marble is Lasa white Italian marble.

Aditi broke down everything except structural columns, and focused on creating a “modern minimalist” home that gave each family member the private sanctum they needed. She also created extra storage space—“Our client loved storage and the excitement was immense every time we found a new corner to add storage," she laughs.

A neutral palette dominates the primary bedroom. The bespoke headboard was designed by AVN Interiors and built on site, and the soft-toned bed linen and curtains are from Home Couture. Adding a touch of glamour to the muted space are gold lights from Jainsons Emporio.

A glass partition separates the dining and terrace bar. The latter, Aditi shares, is among the favourite spaces of the family. The bar further opens into the main bedroom, with an attached walk-in-closet and bath, resplendent in black and white.

The daughter’s room is an airy, all-white haven peppered with sea green accents. The bed linen and cushions are from No Mad, and the cane cupboards are from Modulinea Modular Systems.

Wanting to highlight the stunning sea views, Aditi stuck to a black, white and grey palette—peppering it with glimmers of gold to add an element of luxury. The designer says, “All materials used follow a similar colour palette making the space as calm as the waters of the sea it faces.” Lasa white Italian marble runs through the house. Breaking the monotony, the primary bathroom features panda marble and a powder room is dressed in black Saint Laurent. Hints of dull gold appear throughout, like in the lights of the primary bedroom, gold bathroom fittings, and in decorative accents peppered through the house. Little pops of colour show up in soft furnishings or accent furniture pieces in the kids' rooms—rust cushions in the living room, and a sea-green window seat in the daughter’s bedroom. A calm energy reverberates through the home, a combination of the grounding views and the minimalist, reassuring interiors.
