Bathed in the colours of the sky, this luminous Mumbai apartment is a sunset sanctuary

With a grey ceiling, suffusions of blush pink and lots of natural light, this Mumbai home by SML Architects is dusk come alive

当Mahek Lalan SML建筑师第一次访问this home, although he stayed for just an hour, he witnessed a sunset so extraordinary, that it went on to define the design theme of this apartment. “The sky transitioned from a soft pink to a dramatic grey, hinting at possible colour schemes that could combine grey and pink in various capacities and scales,” he says. Lalan was given carte blanche for the project and chose to draw inspiration from the clients' down-to-earth lifestyle. “They led a very simple life; that for us was the starting point for the design. Also, as a practice, we use only natural materials for our projects.”

Living Room

Lalan's sky-inspired palette finds rare expression in the ceiling, which is emblazoned with a sweeping, dusk-grey hue. A three-seater sofa and a pair of armchairs made of reclaimed Burma teak wood inspire an air of old-world technicolour, while a black river-finished granite centre table and hemp area rug tame the hard lines and cuts of the furniture. Vintage charm glimmers through a four-piece series of artworks—featuring a gramophone player, a typewriter, a cassette and a still camera—which root the room in a languid, lingering sense of nostalgia. Lalan notes, “We sought to establish a visual continuum by way of materials, colours and textures. You'll notice pale pink and grey ebb and flow across spaces, along with the yellowish gold of the teak wood and the dull yellow of the patterned Shahabad floor.”

Dining Room

“餐厅附近生活room and the first space one notices when entering the home through the main door,” shares Lalan. A reclaimed Burma teak wood dining table with a black frame and a flame-finished granite table-top is the tour de force of the dining room, while “the chairs are the iconic mid-century ‘Wishbone Chair' by Hans Wegner.” A trifecta of rose-and-black paintings overarch the dining table, diffusing the dark aesthetic with a bouquet of blush hues.

Master Bedroom

A floating double bed takes centre stage in the master bedroom, channelling a Bohemian vibe by way of its teak headboard with handmade rope infill. Open shelves line the wall behind, masquerading as a charming bijou library. Louvred panels with recessed shutter handles sheath the wardrobes to the right, providing a warm offset to the sea of mellow whites.

Son's Bedroom

The son's bedroom is balanced harmoniously, with a single bed on one side of the room and a study table on the other. The wardrobe shutters, composed of reclaimed Burma teak wood and fluted glass infills, pose as luminous centrepieces, “adding a level of transparency and depth to the otherwise compact room.” Here, the drama is in the details, as the semi-circular, hand-crafted door handles of the wardrobe, finished with natural matte polish, dazzle in their natural wood grain.
