Eclectic Studio of Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra

Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra, the renowned duo known for their paintings, sculptures, installations, interactive games, videos, and design, occupy three apartments in a gated compound a short distance away, a largely self-designed studio on a 5,400-square-foot plot, with double-height ceilings of exposed concrete overlooks a sloping lawn. When they first acquired the apartments as work and living quarters, they were rather characterless cookie-cutter spaces, and the duo set about customising them swiftly but inexpensively. Flea market finds sit comfortably alongside Eames chairs, porcelain sculpture, and the artists' own colourful canvases in their apartment. They call one of the apartments—an interactive lab-plus- office—their “think space”. It is here that the works are digitally conceived from a vast database of images—sketches, photographs, objets trouvés—which are then carefully sifted and layered to create preparatory drafts, often in 3-D renderings.

An Exquisite Abode for Hemant Sagar and Didier Lecoanet

The Indo-French fashion partnership between designers Hemant Sagar and Didier Lecoanet, which started at couture school in Paris in 1979, has wended a long route. From their first store on Paris's rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, to a large factory in Gurgaon, and a wide network of online and offline stores—they also handle production for brands such as Balmain and Chloé in France. It was Sagar's father, a prominent lawyer and forward thinker, who bet on Gurgaon as a city of the future. In 1999, he bought a 2,700-square-foot plot to build a two-storeyed, four-bedroom family home with a terrace and encircling garden. When Sagar and Lecoanet relocated their business to India, they wanted a place of their own. As luck would have it, Gurgaon property prices slumped, and some years later, taking the stray cow they spotted on the empty plot next door as a good omen, they bought it (the plot, not the cow). Eventually, over five-and-a-half years, they built a beautiful villa, designed by a French architect friend, and decorated on principles of feng shui. It is a tranquil haven of soaring heights, rippling water bodies and soothing woodwork.

Minimalistic Haven for Suhel Seth

Suhel Seth, the peripatetic and proud owner of this 6,000-square-foot apartment in a residential complex in the heart of Gurgaon, believes in a sense of minimalism and the same is reflected in his home. This tech-wired, iPad-controlled apartment was designed by AD50 architects Sonali and Manit Rastogi of Morphogenesis. Under Seth's watchful—and rather creative—eye, the apartment took a year and a half to complete. The result: a modern space that is an example of smart contrasts, a deceptively sprawling home unravelling itself methodically, somewhat nesting like the matryoshka dolls—each tucked inside the other—placed in his study. Seth's home isn't just a showcase for blue-chip contemporary art, but also for 21st-century design and the best in artisanal craftsmanship. “All the pieces of furniture have been made from scratch,” he says.

A Timeless Space by FADD Studio

It is no wonder that the purist canvases of Le Corbusier inspired Bengaluru-based interior design firm FADD Studio to design a modern, minimalist home for a family of four in Gurgaon. While designing the 5,000 square-foot space, the design team—led by interior designers Farah Ahmed Mathias, Dhaval Shellugar and Dheeraj Dhamu—was deeply inspired by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret—their deep sienna passage of the Villa La Roche, their Chandigarh series and the general polychromatic feel of some of their work. The unusual palette of the cement finished grey; Sienna and sage set the stage for a sophisticated and refined shell, which also has a Zen-like calmness and stillness inside this modern and minimalistic home. The furniture is a mix of imported brands and locally customised pieces. They intentionally decided to have natural browns and green fabrics, to preserve this serene and sober experience.
