Europe's first underwater restaurant, aptly called Under, is all set to open in Norway

From Dubai to the Maldives, underwater hotel bars, spas, and restaurants are taking underwater adventures to another level of cool. And now, architecture firm Snøhetta has unveiled plans to build a restaurant in southern Norway that will be submerged partly under the sea.

Outside opening hours, parts of the restaurant will be dedicated to a marine biology research center

The restaurant will not only offer diners stunning views of life below the waves, it will also function as a research centre for marine life. The restaurant will be constructed near the village of Båly in Norway's Lindesnes region—the country's southernmost tip.

The building will comfortably accommodate 80-100 guests. Muted lighting from the inside of the restaurant and installed on the seabed will help stage the wildlife flourishing on the sandbank outside the panoramic acrylic window.

The building, described by the Oslo firm as "Europe's first underwater restaurant", will comprise a rugged concrete box with half its concrete torso on the coastline, and the other half submerged under water.

The building will comfortably be able to accommodate 80-100 guests

Aptly named 'Under'—a word that is quite similar to "wonder", when translated into Norwegian, the structure's concrete walls will be a metre thick, safeguarding against the inhospitable environment.

The restaurant's colour palette follows the logic of the different stories of the construction. While the champagne bar is characterised by subdued colours evoking the sediment of shells, rocks and sand, the dining room is submerged in darker blue and green colours inspired by the seabed, seaweed and rough sea.

The materials chosen for the restaurant not only have aesthetic qualities but also sport sustainable characteristics that will help create a good indoor climate.
